Description
A little over 10 years ago, Lars Wild was a theatre actor in Berlin. He was playing The Misanthrope – a play which explores the conflict between truth and societal norms through the character of Alceste, a man who openly despises the hypocrisy of his peers. Through this role, Lars came to a realisation about the dysfunction of human culture and our unsustainable trajectory and knew that something had to change.
Lars went into solitude in the countryside, fasting for 21 days with no distractions, and made a radical decision to move to southwest Alentejo, Portugal – one of Europe’s least populated areas. He was on a journey, looking for a way to collaborate with nature in ways that weren’t possible in the city – to learn to work with it, as it.
After a few years spent living off-grid and experimenting with alternative ways of living, first through permaculture and regenerative agriculture, he came across Syntropic agriculture: a philosophy towards working with the land which has been shown to turn arid terrain into thriving, biodiverse, food-producing ecosystems.
His current mission is focused on transforming an old quinta on the Rio Mira into a thriving food forest with diverse species and healthy soil – creating a self-sufficient system which provides an abundance of fruits, nuts and vegetables. This short film provides an introduction into Lars’ philosophy on humanity, nature, agriculture and the potential for a future based on ecological paradise.
